Abstract: The Office of the Children's Rights Commissioner for London is a fixed-term voluntary sector project, which was set up in March 2000 and closed its activities on April 2003. Its main aim was to demonstrate the value of a Children's Rights Commissioner for all children as part of the campaign for a Children's Rights Commissioner of England. It also worked to promote the full implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and to make London into a world class child-friendly city. Many organizations, from Government to local youth projects are starting to think about how they can involve children and young people in making decisions and running projects. Since the Office opened it has held several meetings with people who wanted to learn about an Advisory Board. The Office had an Advisory Board of 24 members comprised of children and young people who were recruited and trained to work in partnership with paid staff members, help make decisions, contribute their expertise and make sure that a project remains child-focused. Staff and Advisory Board Members worked together to create this Advisory Board Handbook in order to demonstrate the benefits of the involvement of children and young people in community life and to give them an active role in developing and running projects.
