Participatory Water and Sanitation Project in Kibera, Nairobi
This programme, launched in October 1996, aims to ensure that children live in a protective and clean environment, with access to clean potable water. It aims to increase access to clean and safe water by 20 per cent and to provide a hygienic and safe environment for children in two villages of Kibera Informal Settlement in Nairobi. Kibera is the oldest and the largest informal settlement in Nairobi and is a good foundation for developing sustainable and participatory interventions for improving the protection of the Rights of Urban Children. Through UNICEF assisted advocacy and programme support, the project built up partnership between communities and their local government as well as NGOs to push forward improvements in environmental sanitation and access to water. At community level, the strategy of Participatory Hygiene and Sanitation Transformation (PHAST) was used and training tools were created to mobilize, sensitive and train communities to take ownership and plan and implement their own improvements. All initiatives were planned, implemented and managed jointly with community.
