Partners

The Child Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI) represents a partnership among a wide range of actors in the international arena, at the national and at the local levels. Action through partnerships has increased understanding of CFC, has shared experiences and lessons learned, and has strengthened capacities of local administrations, communities, networks and associations. In this regard, key actors with whom the CFC Secretariat has worked include:

  • Research institutions, experts and networks, including Childwatch International, a network of research institutions working to promote children’s rights, and the City University of New York – Children’s Environments Research Group for the ongoing CFC research. Two research studies were developed in the Philippines and in Italy in collaboration with the Ateneo de Manila University, UNICEF Philippines and UNICEF New York, and the Universities of Urbino and Modena respectively.

  • Municipalities, local administrations of cities and towns and communities from all over the world.

  • Regional CFC and networks such as the European Network of Child Friendly Cities, which intends to promote child participation in decision making processes concerning cities and organises bi-annual conferences on children and cities; the Child Friendly Initiative - Asia Pacific that collects and supports experiences in Asia and the Pacific region, and the European Cities against Child Poverty, a EU -wide partnership to address the root causes of child poverty in cities through sharing experiences.

  • Other movements concerned with children living in cities and communities, such as the Mayors Defenders of Children’s Rights and the International Association of Educating Cities.

  • National and international NGOs, national associations, networks and groups working on children’s rights, child participation and local governance.

  • UN agencies, among them UN Habitat as a leader in dealing with human settlements and an initiator of the CFCI; UNESCO, particularly in relevant projects such as Growing Up in Cities; and UNDP, in its role to strengthen good governance at the local level. Within UNICEF, interaction is on-going with UNICEF Country and Regional Offices, National Committees, and the Policy and Programme Units, including the Adolescent Development and Participation unit (ADAP) in the New York Headquarters and the Private Fundraising and Partnership division (PFP) in the Geneva Regional office.
