Best practice - Mental health

The city of Seocho-gu, Korea, has witnessed a significant rise in psychological and emotional difficulties among youth in the past years, with interpersonal relationship issues being the most prevalent. The local government recognized the urgent need for early detection and intervention, especially as school violence, bullying, and cyber threats became more common. The lack of sufficient counseling resources in elementary schools further underscored the necessity for innovative outreach.

To address these gaps, Seocho-gu launched in 2019 the "Mind Recharge" mobile counseling bus, which brings psychological support directly to schools and communities. This approach increases accessibility for children, adolescents, parents, and local residents, overcoming the limitations of center-based services. The bus is staffed by a team of professionals and offers emergency intervention, psychological testing, and counseling, making mental health support more immediate and visible.

The initiative includes a wide range of experiential programs: school violence prevention, cyber violence prevention, cyber language etiquette training, and emotional support activities. These programs use interactive methods such as board games, escape rooms, and VR experiences to engage youth, foster empathy, and teach conflict resolution. The bus also participates in local festivals and school events, further integrating mental health education into everyday life.

A key strength of the program is its collaboration with local organizations, parents, and college student supporters ("Mind Keepers"). These supporters help run activities, monitor program quality, and provide feedback, ensuring that services remain relevant and effective. Regular satisfaction surveys and feedback mechanisms allow for continuous improvement and adaptation to the evolving needs of the community.

Since its inception, the counseling bus has reached tens of thousands of children, youth, and families, with high satisfaction rates reported. The initiative has strengthened early identification of at-risk youth, improved access to psychological support, and promoted positive communication within families. Future goals include developing new digital content, expanding programs for younger children, and enhancing experiential learning to meet the needs of the digital generation.

The "Mind Recharge" counseling bus in Seocho-gu exemplifies a proactive, community-based approach to child and adolescent mental health. By prioritizing accessibility, preventive education, and continuous feedback, it offers a replicable model for other regions seeking to address similar challenges.
