Youth Participatory Budget

Cascais, Portugal

Best practice - Budget Allocation

In the city of Cascais, a Youth Participatory Budget was created to foster civic participation while training students on child rights and how they could actively participate in their community. This child-led initiative was structured in a manner that first children were trained on participative democracy, then each school council discussed and voted three budget priorities for the school and one voting priority for the city.

These proposals would then be presented by ambassadors to the teachers, the project team and the school director. Since 2016, the project has grown to include 15 schools in the city, each which now receives 10,000 euros. In 2018, the YBP won the Good Citizenship Practice Prize of 2017.
