In September 2025, UNICEF, in partnership with the City of San Fernando, multi-UN agencies, and local partners, proudly launched the Child Friendly Cities Initiative, a global initiative across more than 35 countries, in San Fernando through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between UNICEF Representative for Eastern Caribbean Abdulkadir Muse and Mayor of San Fernando His Worship Robert Parris.

During the World Children’s Day celebrations chaired by Kamla Persad-Bissessar, Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, in November 2025, a highlight of the day was the presentation of Cities Through Our Eyes, a child photography advocacy tool designed to amplify children’s voices and perspectives. This milestone marks a significant step toward building safe, inclusive, and empowering spaces for children.

The initiative strengthens education, child protection, psychosocial support, and social protection systems, ensuring that children, especially those on the move and from vulnerable communities, have equitable access to services and environments where they feel safe, valued, and heard.

At the launch, the Prime Minister, senior leadership of the parliament, Ministers, development partners and ambassadors, educators, and government representatives underscored the importance of child centered approaches in fostering resilience and social cohesion. The initiative also introduces innovative tools and participatory activities that empower children to actively shape solutions for their communities.

This achievement reflects UNICEF’s commitment to working hand in hand with national, cities and community stakeholders to embed child protection and wellbeing into local systems, ensuring that every child in San Fernando can thrive in a safe and nurturing environment.
