"Measuring Educational Poverty" Conference in Naples, Italy
UNICEF Italy participates in the National Institute of Statistics' conference to highlight the importance of data collection in tackling child poverty in the municipal policies
16 April 2026 - On April 16th, the conference “Measuring Educational Poverty” organized by the National Institute of Statistics (Istat) was held in Naples. The purpose of the conference was to present the results of almost three years of work conducted by the Interinstitutional Commission on educational poverty established by the Istat. The Commission proposed a definition of educational poverty and a measurement framework of indicators.
The conference highlighted that educational poverty is a multidimensional phenomenon resulting from the family, economic, and social context in which children and young people live.
As a member of the Commission, UNICEF Italy (including its President, Mr. Nicola Graziano) took part in the seminar drawing attention to the role of municipalities in the effort to eradicate child poverty. It has been an opportunity for UNICEF Italy to present the Child Friendly Cities Initiative and how it works with municipalities to design data-driven local policies that address the needs of children, especially the most vulnerable ones - while improving services and expanding educational opportunities - to fully implement the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
